Saturday just past I ended up in going to a local club, and (apologies motleybabe if you read this :-)) it ended up being one of the weirdest things I been to for ages.
To clarify, I don't like what I term 'dancy' music, basically Ibiza style house (correct me if I get the terms wrong). I don't like it and I don't get it. So, I find it strange to see people totally caught up in it.
And ok, I'll admit it, I'd had a couple of drinks but compared to most folk there I was stone cold sober. I had this amazing sense of clarity about it though - it was like I was seeing the place stripped bare. I've thought before how strange dancing can look if you're not involved/connected with it and I think that's part of what I was experiencing.
Part of the problem was that I'd been reading a book on Situationalist International movement (aligned with the Surrealist, Dadaist movements in the 60's and taking elements from Marxism) which says that the spectacle is everywhere. That was it - I was a spectator to a spectacle fuelled by consumerism (where the choices are 'do I drink or not/what do I drink').
I think it's when you're in the fringes of a society/group that you can see things others can't. Anyway, it was a bizarre, exhilarating experience.
