It doesn't mean anything to me...I saw on CNN this morning that the average consumer spends $119 on V day. Now multiply that by ten's of million and you got yourself the GDP for a lot of countries. For all of you who are sane enough to realize the madness of this day, try staying home tonight and resist spending.

Hey Mike!Any occasion to celebrate the ones we love is great. Does this necessarily require spending lavishly to convey one's love? No, not at all. Heart felt words expressed in a card will do the trick. Should this be expressed on only one day a year that's publicly recognized? No, but it a great reminder for those of us who get so wrapped up in the daily grind, that we forget to appreciate our partners. The problem is that if we are not aware as consumers, we may be lead to believe/assume that our loved ones don't care for us if they don't go through extraordinary lengths to display their love. As such, this places pressure on people to spend. -siami

I always think about St. Valentine on Valentine's day. As a bishop in the early Christian church, he wrote letters from jail, like Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and other martyrs, asking people to love each other better, forgive each other more often and not get consumed by greed, hate and materialism (how's that for irony?). And then he was murdered by his captors. While St. Valentine's message transcends religion and appears to go beyond flowers and chocolates for our special someones, I actually think love and forgiveness is nowhere more important than in our own homes.
