Feeling guilty for taking the money!

I came out of a restaurant and was heading to my car when I noticed a couple, dressed very trendy, standing in the middle of the street. They were trying to find a cab to get a ride home. But there wasn't one in sight. I could tell there was something unusual going on...

Turns out they'd been dating 2 years and she just found out she has breast cancer. He was trying to cheer her up but she just wanted to go home. They asked for a ride. I wanted to oblige but I have a two-seater. I wasn't about to put either of them in my trunk! Then they said they lived only 2 blocks away. I couldn't understand why they didn't walk but agreed to risk getting a ticket and let them cram in to my passenger seat. When I drove the two blocks to their apartment, the guy gave me $40! I refused to take it but he insisted and ultimately tossed two twenties in my car as I was driving off. Start to finish the whole adventure took 5 minutes. Why do I feel so guilty keeping the money?

If he threw the money into the car you had no choice but to accept it.  You probably feel guilty because you realize in the scheme of things there was really nothing you could do to help alleviate the discomfort they were both experiencing.  You also probably felt a little helpless and figured a short ride was the least you could do, without doing too much.  If you are still unsure about the money you can always donate it to a charity that specializes in breast cancer research.

You’re a great HUMAN!

The donation is a good idea Tam.

Behzad, you helped this couple without any expectation of reward.  When the gentleman tossed the $40 dollars into your car, it was his way of expressing his gratitude and appreciation for your kind deed.  Accepting the gift is a way of acknowledging his appreciation.

We did nothing to "deserve" the warming rays of the Sun, our next breath...  As children of the universe, we are constantly drinking in the superabundance of Life.  In that way, Life is truly a gift.  When we give and receive, I think we reflect the universal flow of Life itself.

When someone complimented me, I  would deflect this act of kidness with some witty remark.  In the midst of a genuine verbal gift, sometimes I would feel awkward.  I am learning to say, "Thank You."

Thank You for the post Behzad :)

D

It's funny you should say that Romeo, but I have a terrible time accepting any form of thanks or compliments. I perfer to just give and give.  It's lately that I can say thanks or let someone do something for me without cringing.  I guess when for so long you expect nothing from anyone when you do receive it's uncomfortable.

FYI Behzad and I share the same Birthday November 25th :)

WOW!!! What great responses to my post. Thank you. I am grateful.

I've also realized the same thing about taking compliments. I feel good about myself when I give them. Why would I deny others the same feelings when they say something nice to me? So I've stopped deflecting and started appreciating. But don't take my word for it... everyone, tell me how great I am!!!! Let's put the new, improved, compliment-accepting Bez to the test!!!!

:-D

TamTam - Happy early b-day  :-) Isn't it great we always get a long weekend to party????

Darren - very inspiring words. They reminded me of the Hafez (Persian poet) poem in which he says...
Even after all this time
the Sun doesn't say to the Earth
"you owe me"
Imagine what a love like that can do
it lights the sky

P.S. TamTam, I LOVED your idea... I will definitely donate it to a breast cancer charity, especialy since I'm doing a "walk for the cure" in a few weeks! It's perfect!
