Hussein Sentenced To Death

Yesterday Saddam Hussein received the death sentence by hanging for his brutal 1982 crackdown in the Shiite town of Dujail.

While no fan of Saddam and his brutal regime, I do not support capital punishment/death penalty. As I see it two wrongs don't make a right...what are your thoughts about the death penalty?

I don't support the death penalty, but I don't feel bad about putting evil people to death either. Other than the vindictive qualities of capital punishment, I don't really see any benefits.

1. It costs more to put someone to death than it does to keep them in jail for life.
2. Capital punishment, in my opinion, is not a deterent. I don't think a would-be mass murderer refrains from cutting up his victims because he's afraid of beeing electrocuted.
3. What if the wrong person is put to death.
4. Life in prison seems more of a punishment.

In this case specifically, I think it's a mistake. It will make saddam a martir and enflame tensions. That said, I don't think the hanging will be carried out for many many years.

I agree with MichaelSon 100% on every point. Death penalty's the dumbest and backward way to deal with a criminal. Who says we've evolved yet? Anyway ... I'd like to piss in Saddam's eyes and have Mike take a dump down his throat to satisfy all my fantasis with that slime-sucking-maggot.

Take a dump down his throat?? Why do you want to reward such a tyrant?

The death penalty is WRONG!!!  It is the only form of punishment in the "Eye for an Eye" brand of justice.  Who says if you take a life that yours has to be taken too???  What if the courts handed down punishments in the same manner for all crimes!  What do you do with a rapist?  Do you rape his wife, mom, or sister?  NO, of course you don't, that would be insane.

Good point, shoobidoo. And I wonder, who would go around raping the criminals' family? Probably really fucked up people who should go to jail.

well hey, i promise that i will do my small part in becoming a more tolerant, loving man & working towards a day when we Humans will hopefully evolve to respect Life. as MLK Jr. said "the old law of an eye for an eye leaves everybody blind".

sadly we humans have proved throughout history/present day that we are the biggest threat to our own existence. now imagine this frightening  scenario; one day when the earth is “overpopulated" to the point of critically taxing our natural resources (food, water, land, fuel, internet bandwidth *hehe* etc), how will the human race deal with this predicament? will people from a certain religion, color, land, ethnicity, etc be considered "undesirable" or “dispensable”? will we once again put humans to sleep like dogs in a shelter as we did mercilessly during the  Armenian Genocide  and with the Jews were during the Holocaust? unfortunately such deplorable actions are often "justified" in the name of justice, science, God or whatever else. Is there every a “good” justification for taking a life? is this ever truly "justice"?

some sad factoids  to chew on
  • states with the death penalty: 38
  • number of executions since 1976: 1,053
  • race of defendants executed:
57% white34% black7% hispanic2% other
  • Race of victim in death penalty cases
79% white14% black5% Hispanic2% other
  • Race of death row inmates (total 3,366)
45% white42% black11% Hispanic2% other

I don't care for the death penalty. Violence and killing don't solve violence and killing.

There is a war on crime, a war on poverty, a war on drugs.  I believe this stems from such polarized thinking as:  right and wrong, with us or against us, good or bad.  Perhaps instead of such destructive "solutions" it is time for some creativity.

It has been said that  "a problem cannot be solved on the same level of consciousness that the problem was created."

i dont support the death penalty. No one should have the power to end anothers life. We have money to spend on the lavish lives of politicians then we have money to keep those evil men in jail learning their lesson. (not that all do) But at least they're of the streets. maybe we should create an isolated island in the middle of the sea and send all the ppl in all the maximum security prisons (well all the ppl who are child molesters, rapist, murderers, and the such) to this island to fend for themselves with 20 dollars and some good luck... i wonder what would happen. that would be cheaper no?

belirosa wrote on Nov 08, 10:29 AM

i know i went there... spooky place. but im saying an island withouth guards or laws. Just a normal deserted island. no buildings no bodegas  nothing but trees and grass and some wild animals... So that they have to live in the wild and fend for themselves we dont gotta feed them or keep a roof over their head. see its cheaper! Imagine saddam hussein trying to make fire out of wood... or hunting.

Hmmm ... a bunch of criminals on a deserted plot of land with trees, grass and wild animals ... sounds familiar .... that's how they populated colonies back in the day and how Austrailia started out .... over-populated prisons ... send them to the New Land - America  or Austrailia.... Unfortunately you are not the first to come up with this idea ... the honor goes to the English :-) Cheerio Mate!
Although, this may have been a good idea at first Belirosa, the circle of life will evolve this so called prisoner's island back into another modern society plaqued with the same shit over again!

damn. well i guess cuba did it too now that i think about it... but still... lol i think it would be cheaper.
