A small gesture on my part turned into something larger than I expected; but it's all good.
Last week I took some information on summer internship opportunites to the location where my son attends an afterschool program because I know that a teen program is also offered there. Well, this small gesture turned into a request to offer some resume writing and interview tips to the teens. So before I knew it I had agreed to do it and convinced a friend to co-teach with me. We anticipated a group of 10 and while I was disappointed that there were only 3, or rather 2.5 since one kept walking in and out, it was still all good. When we were leaving I discovered that there were at least 15 others who completely avoided the workshop, opting instead to do "teen things".
One seemed very interested and asked questions and during the portion where I was explaining that there are some questions that are illegal for interviewers to ask during an interview, it was revealed that one of them had in fact been asked such a question before.
My friend and I both offered to be available to return and offer another session on this topic or even another and told the few in attendance that if they had any other questions that they could ask the program coordinator and he would contact us, well rather me since I'm there everyday.
My point in writing this is to remind everyone that sharing our experience and expertise with the next generation is something that we should do. We never know the positive impact our small gesture will have especially on a teenager who is on the cusp of things and could go down a good path or a bad path depending upon if someone takes even a small moment to show that they care. It's not about getting paid in money but in the "warm fuzzy feeling" you get inside - that feeling is priceless.
