Socrates lived in a way that other poeple could not understand. In the following ancient greek text we can see how his life was. (I give also the translation in english )

Transaltion in english: Xenophon, memoirs, book 1, chapter 6, 1-4

It worths not to leave out what he talked about with the sophist Antiphon. When Antiphon wanted once to make the students leave Socrates and come with his side, he went to Socrates and while they were there, he said: " Socrates, I thought that philosophers should become happy, but you seem to me that you have enjoyed exactly the opposite that philosophy gives. You live in a way that not even a slave would bear live under his master control. You eat and drink the worst things and you wear a cloth not only worthless but also the same in winter and in summer and you never wear shoes, neither a tunic. And not only this, but you not even take money (from the students), which enjoy them when we gain them and help  us to live more free and more pleasant  when we get them. So, if you make your students like you, like the other teachers do in other arts making their students to imitate them, then you must believe that you are a misfortune teacher." And Socrates answered to this: " I think Antiphon ,  you believe that I live so miserable that I'm sure you would prefer to die than to live like me? So please lets see what you think is miserable in my life."

As you can see form the text Socrates was a total different person and lived his life in his own way. That was his philosophy. But poeple who hated him and felt jelous of him tried to use this to defame Socrates and make his students to run away from him. One of them was the sophist Antiphon who really did not like Socrates at all and as you can read tried to defame him and proove that he was a bad teacher and a bad model for young persons.

What do you think was Socrates' greatest philosophical realization or discovery?

His discovery was ἕν οἶδα, ὅτι οὐδέν οἶδα = en itha oti outhen itha = I know only one thing, that I know nothing. He found out that we can be sure only for one thing: that we know nothing. Whoever says that knows the truth for everything or just for one thing is a liar or he is under an illusion.

What great humble men he was to be remembered to date. Prophet Mohammed (saw) was also a humble man who only slept on a floor mattress and had very few possessions even when the wealth of the emerging muslim empire in Arabia was at his grasp.

I thank you for this blog, I know very little about greek philosophy, but I did get 7 years of Shakespeare literature to assimilate in order to get the grade in English. I always go back to Qur'an for Reading is greatly encouraged in islam.
