My Bonsai Collection... haYA!

A bonsai is a miniature tree. The chinese and japanese perfected the art of growing these trees many generations ago. Most people don't realize that most varieties of bonsai are deciduous trees which are best left outside, even during the winter. There are some tropical bonsai (also called indoor bonsai) which can be kept indoors. Mine are all indoor bonsai.

Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai (Shefflera Aboricola 'Luseane')

I love the air roots on this one. This is one of the easiest bonsai to care for. great for beginners and can do well in medium light.

Above: Brazilian Rain Tree (Pithecellobium tortum) - Like a fascinating natural weather station, this bonsai responds to ambient conditions by closing its leaves when it rains, gets dark or becomes too hot.

Japanese Elm

The following are some new baby bonsai which I am going to train:

Green Isle Banyan (Ficus 'Green Isle')

Thousand Star (Serissa Japonica)

Box Leaf Fig (Ficus Buxifolia)

These are pretty. I'd love to have one or two. Looks like you're taking good care of them. How often do you water them?

The hardest part of keeping healthy bonsai is knowing when to water them. For many of them, you have to water them just before the dirt dries out. You do not want to keep it soggy all the time because that can lead to root rot. So, usually every 2 or 3 days, but only if the top layer is starting to dry out.

I got the ELm at Ikea, of all places. The Umbrella is from a mail order place called brusselsbonzai.com, and the other little ones are from a local nursery. I bought the pots online and repotted them. I got the moss off a tree in my backyard. Give it a try! You don't need to get an expensive one. Get a small one and see how it goes!
