What kind of dog do I have?

Odette was at work today, and I was spending some time detailing the kitchen when Steve from across the street knocked on my door. I see him walking his dog all the time, so it didn't surprise me that he came with one. He said: "Hi! I have something for you." I looked at his hands and then around a bit. "Really? What?", I asked. "This dog!", he answered with a grin.

Long story short, his adult daughter found the dog and was unable to find the owner. She already has her hands full with her own dog, so she was looking for someone to take it. "Keep it for a couple days, see if you like him... we call him Max," Steve told me. So I took Max!

Odette came home and he jumped on her and lathered her with kisses as if she had forever been his mommy. She had no objection to us "trying out" the dog. Before going to bed tonight, she said she wantd to keep Max. So, I guess we have 7 kids now:
- Gus the beagle
- Meenow the cat
- 1,2 and 3 the turtles
- Arigato the snake
- And Max the... hey what kind of dog IS max anyway? Need some help here.

He's a small curly haired dog. About 14 inches high. He has HUGE paws, but I don't think he's a puppy. My best guess is that he is some kind of spaniel... maybe a cocker spaniel??

Any ideas?

LOL, yea. I've always wanted a mop dog. Thanks tristatewriter... he does look a bit like a poodle. At first I thought he was a poodle mix.

A bit of info about the Cocker Spaniel:

From Wikipedia.com (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Cocker_Spaniel):

The signature trait of the American Cocker Spaniel is its dark, expressive eyes that reflect a happy, loving, and active nature. Cockers are a dropped eared breed (pendulous ears) and the mature Cocker is shown in a full feathered, silky coat. After its show career ends, the fur is often trimmed into a "puppy cut", shortened on the legs, sides and belly, that is easier to keep whether as a pet, performance dog, or hunting companion

Their temperament is typically joyful and trusting. The ideal Cocker temperament is merry, outgoing, and eager to please everyone. They can be good with children and usually sociable and gentle with other pets. They tend to be "softer" dogs who do not do well with rough or harsh training.

American Cocker Spaniels in UK and USA/Canada surveys had a median lifespan of about 10-11 years, which is on the low end of the typical range for purebred dogs, and 1-2 years less than other breeds of their size.
