Big bucks big pharma, and also Micheal Moore

I just got finished watching the hyped micheal moore film "sicko" and although i do see general hypocracy in moore's works i must say that this is a great film that every american must watch. One of the parts that stood out to me was that a woman on a $1000 a month budget had to spend hundreds a month on pills that she found in cuba for... 5 cents !!

It reminded me alot of a great doc. film i saw months back called "Big bucks big pharma" you can watch it for free here

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6839989630008583884&q=big+bucks+pharma&total=26&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0

this along with moore's film gives a good idea of how currupt and sick these industrys are, especially in the states.

all the best

Moe, I've seen both of these films as well and together they do show how for profit businesses are taking us for a ride.  These fuckers keep lobbying against socialized medicine to scare us in thinking that socialized medicine is this evil thing.

It's very simple if you think about it...take all the profits that are being made by these corporations and then imagine spending all of that towards peoples doctor's bills and towards their overall health.  That is exactly what will happen if we had a government run health care system that is not for profit.

My friend was saying that this is Moore's first effort where he seems to be aware of the fact that he is not a journalist and more of a satirist.  Looking forward to seeing it.

I'd be interested to hear from some Canadian's on Nuzizo about this topic. Most people I know that in Canada (Toronto) hate the socialized health care. People have to wait months for appointments and in many cases the quality is poor. I know of people in Toronto who visit the US every so often (N. NY) for their routine Doc visits.
I have not seen the movie yet. From what I know of the industry, there is just an ugly battle between government regulations, doctors, and health care providers that keep pushing the costs way up.

Cnagle,

I find it hard to believe that people wait months, Months for what? Elective surgery? maybe.....   Not for routine visits, that's simply unheard of.  In Canada, because it is socialised, the most severe cases jump the queue, so for instance, if you were in the emergency room first but someone injured badly comes in, well, you go behind them. Same for specialists, a cancer patient will get in for an mri before someone with a sports injury that is not life threatening. At the same time, Canadians don't fear going to the Doctor, and are as strongly opposed to privatization as americans are about giving up thier guns. I have not met even one Canadian who would prefer the American system. I'm not saying they don't exist, I'm just saying that they are rare.

Any attempt to privatize medicine here in Canada would mean the end of a ruling party, they would be quickly voted out and they know it. Even the most conservative voters don't want their health care messed with.

What does tend to happen is that Canada often experiences a shortage of specialists, because they can make often twice as much across the border, so Canadians foot the bill for most of their education and get none of the benefit. So yes, there can be wait times for specialists but more often than not it's because of a shortage of doctors and not because there is rationing.  It's part of the price we pay for living so close to a very large country with a lot of money.

Every Canadian is convered under health care, no one dies because they can't see a dr. people aren't shuffled to substandard hospitals because they don't have the right insurance or no insurance. Every citizen is treated the same. I'll wirte a blog about it, I will need to do a bit of research first tho.

Hey gin,
Thanks for sharing. My parents lived in Toronto for a few years and experienced some issues. They had some stories from other Cadanian citizens about issues with specialists. I will try to get more information so I can share. In the states, something definitely needs to change with healthcare. I am not educated enough on the system to say what should or should not be done, but I do think any shift is going to be extremely difficult. I feel that a fully government run healthcare system will not be beneficial in the states, but a completely business driven healthcare system is obviously dangerous. From what I hear, in Europe everyone has standard healthcare, but they buy up for more coverage (correct me if I am wrong).
Through conversation I hope to learn more.

I doubt it is common for people to wait months to receive medical care, something of note i saw in the film was that in france you could have a Dr. drive to your house in minutes for even symptoms of a stomach flue !!!

I doubt canada has those standards, but atleast in France it seemed the average Joe would be taken care of as though your dad is a U.S congressman.

cnagle, I don't know how it is in other countries, I doubt Canada has the best healthcare in the world but the long wait times are being addressed.  And from the little research I did do, this issues with specialists was over elective surgeries and not life threatening ones. I'll see if I can't add a country comparison to my blog, tho it could take me awhile to put it all together.
