I guess I could live without all of it; afterall I lived before these things. Sure I like having my laptop since i can sit wherever and do stuff, but before I had a computer of any kind I either wrote letters to people, picked up the phone (landline) or went to visit them. If I needed to look up something; I opened a book (or two). Before I had a cellphone I used the phone in my house to call people or found a pay phone and made calls. If someone needed to reach me, they called me at home or at work if necessary and if I wasn't in, they waited until I called them back or they tried again. If anything collectively we have become to dependent on gadgets and too obssessed by them (okay some people). People used to travel with safety in mind; today with cell phones people don't do that as much and then complain (or even file a lawsuit) if something happens and they couldn't get a signal even if there was an emergency phone along the road. Instant accessiblity often won't change the course of events once they are in motion and are destined to be. And it is so inconvenient because people then think they can call whenever they want and you will be on the other end of the phone. I mean dang, it is so irritating to go into a public restroom and hear someone having a conversation while in the stall doing "their business" or have to dodge pedestrians that are too busy yakking (or perpetrating the fraud) while crossing the street against the light; and they want to give dirty looks if you come so close they can feel the heat from your engine. "Like hello, idiot; pay attention, you don't have the light". With the economy such as it is many of us may be forced to give up gadgets in favor of paying for necessities. Life will go on and people may actually start talking to one another again.
