There is a hot debate about this in england; some british activists call honor killing "domestic violence leading to murder" specially affecting women & girls in diverse communities. From what i understand, from reading in the press, it is about an individual being perceived by a majority or a leader as disobeying the normal rules of her entourage (whether religious or secular) and possibly as commiting a sin such as adultery which is highly punishable in islam - alhamdullilah. I read about the girl who got stoned to death by her people for falling in love with a local muslim lad ... & another about wanting to marry outside her gipsy community ....
the question is what crime did she/he commit? and who are the judges in the decision to kill her or him? and how is "honor" being defined in that social group? as there are many variances, the difference is in whether your family/community will cover your mistakes and extend their mercy on you for whatever wrong you have done to their eyes.
is there hope for rehab or re-education e.g: as the support which unmarried mothers now get in 21st century england? where in other places unmarried mothers are completely rejected by society. again picked up by some charity, if lucky.
shame that many people do get away with serious crimes without ever facing a tribunal.
in the free world of western democracy, many young and old people are often abandoned and neglected by their families for a number of reasons, leaving charitable organisations to provide for their basic needs. some are even suicidal because noone cares. I believe that the teachings of my religion, when clearly understood and implemented can provide answers to many injustices in society, such as neglect of daughters, widows and orphans amongst us. After all evrything is transient in this life & Allah is most fair.
