The story goes like this: Pelias, the King of Iolkos (near the city of Volos, today), ordered prince Jason to go to Colchis (near Mt.Kaukasus by the Black Sea) to bring the Golden Fleece. Jason recruited the greatest heroes, like Hercules, Orpheus, Telamon, Peleas (father of Achilles) etc. They builded the famous ship of Argo and after many adventures they reached Colchis. Aehetis, The King of Colchis, refused the give them the Golden Fleece. So they stole it with the help of Medea, daughter of Aehetis. They took the Fleece and Medea and went back to Iolkos, where Jason became a King....
I posted this story because it has a strange relation with the city I live now. I live in a suburb of Athens called Argyroupolis ("City of Silver" in Greek). The original Argyroupolis was by the Black Sea in today's Turkey. But after the Greek-Turkish war and the population exchange, all people that survived and came to Athens, founded this city.
Near the original Argyroupolis there was the city of Chrysoupolis ("City of Gold" in Greek). These cities owed their names from the mines of Gold and Silver that were there.
Now, it is believed, that the myth of the Argonautic Campaign is about the efforts of the Greeks to take under control the deposits of Gold and Silver ("The Golden Fleece") of the region. That means that we may have Jason as our ancestor. (Haha - it is a long shot, isn't?). Anyway it is fascinating to think about it, even if we know that this is just a myth...
