What makes our neighborhood unique?

Posted by habib on Sunday, March 04, 04:21 PM

I read the initial description, but how else have we defined ourselves?  What can we offer our community that other neighborhoods can't?  I am new, but just want to get the discussion started.  This should just be a brainstorming thread.  Once we get an idea of our vision, we can start another thread listing more concrete suggestions.  Then we can start threads for various initiatives that we want to work on.  Thanks.

Oh yeah, can someone throw together some sort of cool logo?  do we already have one?  We have the building, but is that it?

ok, so it is official, i have moved from Rumi to the Lower East Side. it felt weird at first, but i am excited about the move. i know some very cool people here, so the transition will be easier.

upon hearing the news of my move, "siamiyami" who lives in rumi, jokingly called me a "sell out". *hehe* have no fear, i have the freedom to regularly visit my peeps in Rumi Smile

alright mike, let's get to it! some additional questions/suggestions that are worthwhile discussing:

What can we offer our community that other neighborhoods can't?

how about redeeming/trading in Rep points for site services? creating a space where one or more citizens can lease services like a neighborhood chat room that all citizens of that neighborhood can enjoy. upon the termination of the lease, the original renters can have first right of refusal to renew the lease. it would also be a nice touch to allow the renter(s) to name the chat room or any other public service rented (like say, "Habib's Hookah Lounge").

what other services would be useful for us to have in the Lower East Side? maybe news feeds about the arts, international affairs, politics, technology, etc ? or maybe a digg like feature that allows citizens to deliver/vote on the news reported? for example, i have noticed that many Rumi citizens introduce excerpts and links to US/Iran related articles on their blogs. it would be interesting to see how the news reported and voted on by citizens varies by neighborhood.

Lower East Side landmark and description: how can we formalize this process so that there is a vehicle by which members can chime in and reach consensus for the aforementioned.  shoot,  how about neighborhood and city wide elections? those who run for office would raise funds via Rep contributions from citizens for ad space/DAPs that can help them get their message out. what  powers do elected officials have?

ah man....this is Great stuff that Darren and I explore regularly. mike, for you to raise the questions that you have is inspiring and a huge first step for citizens to own their city.

let us continue to dream beyond the illusions of limitation.

peace.

Okay,  I only have a few minutes right now, but I want to respond to a couple of these ideas.  First, the idea of pooling resources to develop community spaces/services is very appealing to me.  I am much more interested in unlocking features for the community than in unlocking features for myself.  I also like that the renters could name the space.  When someone donates resources, they usually get recognition in someway.  That, and I like the sound of "Habib's Hookah Lounge."  Heck, I almost landed in another neighborhood to live near the hookah lounges!

More Digg-like voting features are key.  News might be a good one, but there needs to be a really easy share mechanism (bookmarklet) first or I will be to lazy to contribute stories.  Eventually, votes could be on stories within the community, blog posts, groups, etc.  Not enough people here for that yet though.  I have been using this site called Jyte.com a lot  recently where people vote on "claims" in a digg like fashion.  For simple planning being able to add simple agree/disagree polling to a post would greatly increase and standardize participation.

Elections are key.  I actually mentioned that first back in the general features group.  I like the idea of collecting donations for ad space.   There should also be debate forums.  Federal government should be limited to a legislature though.  Okay, I have other work to do.  I think these are great ideas and I am glad to see Said made the move.  I am interested to hear everyone else's feedback.

Peace,
Habib

OOooo I like the idea of polls.  and wow! I hadn't thought of pooling resources for amenities and such but that's a fantastic idea!!! I have absolutely no idea what a 'digg' is so perhaps someone could tell me about that?

I'd like to see rep points being shared for the community. Getting rep points is a lot of fun but for me it's not what Nuzizo is all about it's about community and not being the one with the most points. I'd gladly use my rep points to start some services for the neighbourhood.

I also like habib's idea for a logo for the lower east side. I am just not that artistic so, don't look to me for that one but I'm sure others in our neighbourhood would have much to offer in that way.

var statusMsg16883 = new Notificator('statusmsg16883', 1000); Habib,

Here are some of my thoughts about the lower east side neighbourhood.  I've noticed a sort of flavour in this neighbourhood of openness and tolerance. Not that I haven't seen this in other neighbourhoods but along with this openness and tolerance is no agenda at all. There's nothing to live up to or down to, I envision it as a place where you can just be yourself, doesn't matter if you feel like something that cat dragged in after a night on the town, someone will be there to re-charge your batteries with an insightful post they are excited about or just offer a bit of compassion, or if in a playful mood bang a few pots to watch you cringe. :)

I'm glad that there are no specific cultural flavours but rather a blend of individuals who form a community of artistic and free thinking individuals. I can remark on a post of debbie's where she posted this beautiful link of an austistic woman and her views. Shoobidoo and his concerns for the world. I'd like to see more of the artistic, spiritual and non spiritual, welcoming and generous spirit be the hallmark of our neighbourhood."</blockquote>

Reading this makes me glad I chose this neighborhood.  Why did everyone else move here?  Sharing our stories of why we moved here would move us along way towards solidifying our shared vision for the future of the neighborhood.

Peace,
Habib

Hi this is what I initially wrote as an answer to your group ( when I thought it was open to the entire city)

Well I think the first thing that makes Bharat unique is that I live there. That said there is something that has bothered me time and time there are new people joining Bharat and yet I do not know when. It is difficult to keep track of new members in the city much less your own neighborhood. You see them on the main city page then poof they disappear into some unknown neighborhood and the only way you know they are there is if one you request friendship or vive versa or if you read a blog and you see that this interesting person has commented on a picture etc. One way to help created a blanketed bond within the neighborhood is to alert all current residents when someone new has moved in. That gives the current residents a chance to say hello and greet them properly, there’s nothing worse than walking down the stairs in your complex and see a new strange face. A neighborhood that’s has close ties is more apt to spread it to the entire city.

I think it's a good idea. You have to work on the small stuff first then move on the the larger issues.  A cardiologist cannot repair damage to the heart until he first makes the incision to get to the heart. Getting to know your neighbors and the workings of your neighborhood is an excellent way to spread love to the city and encourage participation in the city.

wow, fantastic feedback and energy!! lots to digest here Smile keep it coming!

gin *hi* sorry, should of been more clear about Digg.com

here is their "about us":

Digg is a user driven social content website. Ok, so what the heck does that mean? Well, everything on Digg is submitted by our community (that would be you). After you submit content, other people read your submission and Digg what they like best. If your story rocks and receives enough Diggs, it is promoted to the front page for the millions of visitors to see.

What can you do as a Digg user? Lots. Every person can digg (help promote), bury (help remove spam), and comment on stories... you can even Digg and bury comments you like or dislike. Digg also allows you to track your friends' activity throughout the site — want to share a video or news story with a friend? Digg it!

ghalbroshan  said:  "Or just want to be able to convert their rep points into cash or something with monetary value, a percentage of which could then be donated by Nuzizo to a local charity group of their choice?"

Yes!  That is a great idea, an affinity program.  Earning tiny amounts for charity isn't just morally good, but it is a great motivator.  There have to be models in place.  Set up partnerships with a number of charities would be a great way to get started on that.

As far as the idea of a virtual greeter, that is also great.  But why just one?  Each neighborhood could have a video guide.  User contributed of course.  What better way to meet the locals than through there own voices.

gin_0

gin_0 wrote on Mar 05, 05:26 PM

well I like being the greeter to Nuzizo. It's difficult to catch them all it would be nice if there were a feature that showed all the people who joined in a day then you could easily welcome them. I've tried going thru neighbourhoods but it's a laborious process.  I would like to see more people actually greeting than just some auto greet message that is so impersonal and doesn't give you a sense that someone is reaching out to you. There are a few others who are greeting people on Nuzizo now and I love that! I prefer a more personal touch. So I'm giving a thumbs down to the auto greet thingy.

Here is another thought. I don't know if these request were above the plate or not but it gave me an idea.  I take for granted that I have dual citizenship US/ BWI so it never really crosses my mind when I have to travel. I was asked a few times if I knew anything about immigration laws or on sponsoring someone from over seas and I realized I did.  Now before I get the :are you mad questions" think of this; nuzizo is an international site and although there are going to be people who are fly by night we are going to meet true blue people and hopefully friends for life.  Wouldn’t it be great in our neighborhoods to be able to assist them with information on how to better their lives? Learn a second language?  Groups set up to assist with preparation for school, jobs, life advice. If some one is studying for an exam a study group.  Sponsoring a nuzizo citizen would hopefully pay off in the emotional and mental way.  Tell me if this sucks….cause to be honest I’ve already sent a ton of immigration information to one friend I’ve met who lives in well that‘s between she and I

I am working to make connections like that through library websites and think that is a dream to aspire to for any community.  I am not sure how we can make that happen, but I see absolutely no reason why we can't.  I didn't think this conversation would head hear, but I am happy it did.

What would the first step towards accomplishing these goals be?

princesstamtam

princesstamtam wrote on Mar 05, 11:12 PM

Well that would be where inner neighborhood blogs come in.  Or a bulletin of some sort an internal message board for only that neighborhood for the time being....as a sort of outlet for the different offerings. For example I would post a blog offering my helpf to someone who wants to brush up on their english or studying to take the INS exam.  A few weeks ago I helped my friend study via webcam. I have no clue if I was any help butI tried.  I take things like that seriously I remember when my mum cam home with her little american flag then when she was naturalized.  All she thought about was how it was going to help her family. Each neighborhood should have a local postoffice where all can go look for new postings...

For ideas about starting how to start up an advice network, I might take a look at 43things.com.  It is a site based around goals and peopleare able to form teams, discuss progress, and most interestingly, when you finish a goal it asks whether you would be willing to help other people who have questions about that goal.

How can we in Nuzizo better connect people who have questions or need help with those who can and want to help? Groups and forums can be used.  It is good that we are already tagging groups.  I have some ideas on this, but as I mentioned, I am already working to build something like this for libraries, so I don't want to give too many secrets away.  I think you are on the right track..

I like the charity affinity program idea a lot as a first step.  I think that will help people want to contribute the data that iwll help connect them with one another.

I wrote this a while ago, but if you are in interested, here is a report I wrote on 43Things for a virtual communities class:  http://mchabib.com/43things/

how goes it good folks of Nuzizo?!

word up, you guys/gals are AMAZING!

a few thoughts/questions:

neighborhood greeter(s):
- what if citizens could send a "video email"? in other words, you could record yourself using a webcam and send that video via Nuzizo's internal email system.

- if there is a designated "greeter" responsible for welcoming/assisting new neighbors, how does one apply for this position and how does the selection process work? how would you guys/gals like to see a consensus reached within your neighborhoods for selecting a greeter(s) (neighborhood poll booths)? ditto for everything else ranging from changing your neighborhood header/graphic to changing the description/narrative of your neighborhood, etc.

live chat/chat room: the ball is rolling with the chat room - IM is on the table as well Smile question: aside from paying x Rep points in exchange for leasing a chat room that all your neighborhood citizens can enjoy, what other types of services do you suggest that we offer in exchange for Rep points?

non profit section: we are looking to build an area where non-profits and organizations can create a profile and move in the city. once here, they can share with the city a little about their mission, post upcoming events, photos of past events and how people can get involved, etc. -- citizens could favorite their favorite organizations and in the process meet others who have done the same.

to further help an organizations level of exposure, we could allow them to submit a DAP. if citizens wish to support the non-profit, they could purchase the DAP for themselves and/or send it to friends. based on the zizo to real dollar value of the DAP, we could then give the lion's share of revenues generated from the sell of their DAP to the organization. so the following is achieved: one, a revenue stream is generated for them through their DAP and two, the viral nature of their DAP being sent around the city and appearing on citizen home pages helps spread awareness and increase the non profits exposure.

any suggestions for how nuzizo can better serve the goal(s) of non profits/orgs?

charity/affinity program:  all ears. goli (and everyone else), how do you suggest that we tackle this?

neighborhood bulletin board: good idea

checking out 43things.com right now....

peace!

What about some sort of Classified system?  I suggest a bulletin board in the new Community Center Working Group that I set up.

DRomeo

DRomeo wrote on Mar 09, 03:27 AM

Goli,  I really like that thought.  The idea of inspired, conscious, action within Nuzizo affecting the larger community in a positive way feels right.  Perhaps donations, as you mentioned, are a simple way to begin a partnership that expands as the city expands.

Part of a future Non-Profit profile (the way a citizen has a  home/place)  would include a "mechanism that showcases to citizens how their contributions are being utilized."  Also there would be information on issues, events, members, contact, press, etc.

Habib, agreed, bulletin boards are powerful.  Nuzizo City media outlets (television, radio, etc.) would be a dynamic way to broadcast info to larger segments of the citizenry as well.

Good thread.

PEACE,

D
