Many years ago I spent some 5 years at school learning Old Greek a.o. to read Platoon, Homer, Xenophoon and Herodotos and to learn Latin to read Caesar, Cicero and Ovidius. When I visited Greece some time ago, I was confronted with the fact that I could not speak to- and understand Greek people. I only could read some headings of shops like Apotheke and Bibliotheke ( the same happened in Italy with Italian....)

I always found that I should have learned Modern Greek at school!. I still find that it silly to spend so much time at dead languages, when ( almost ) the same cultural goals can be reached, when student should read the stuff in Modern Greek ( or Italian ....)And the level of communication skills of students should be enhanced considerably!
Helped by the opportunity of a lot of time, by my early retirement and tickled by the information abundance about Greece around the Olympic Games, I got a renewed interest in Greece. It motivated me to get to know as much as possible about Greece, it's people and culture. I started dreaming about staying in Greece, in near future, for a longer time.
