Sex in early Roman civilization included mondo orgies and celebrations dedicated to the reproductive organs. As time wore on the emergence of voluntary sex as well as prostitution was evident; this resulted in a quasi sexual caste system in Roman civilization which included different grades and degrees of sexual relationships. You had the the legally wedd spouses, a number of males used to have “Delicatue” or a mistress usually that of a wealthy affluent man. Then there were the “Famosae” or the black sheep/ soiled doves from a respectable family.
Just your average Mary loves sex just for sex and don’t care much ‘bout marriage. Then, there was another class known as “Lupae” who were willing to have sex with anyone for a price. “Copae” the tavern wenches and sometime hired bedmates for the nights by travelers. Last you have the “Concubini” much like a Concubine but a male instead. He was normally a handsome adolescent slave or houseservant and they would serve their master in bed, until they matured and/or fell into disfavor. OUCH! The Romans were freaky to say the least and it was never more eveident to me than when I first watched the movie Caligula. Not only was he a freak of the week, he was also a great and feared politician. Take a look at “ Caligula’s Dance”. Rent the movie the one with Malcolm MacDowel :o)
